The “Creativity Pioneers” podcast welcomes Lwando Xaso

South Africa, a model for resilience?

Lwando Xaso is considered one of South Africa’s leading constitutional lawyers, writer and human rights activist. She is a part of Constitution Hill Trust, one of Moleskine Foundation’s close partners and contributed to our AtWork Collection.

As a writer and storyteller, Lwando Xaso shows how creativity can be used to push activism forward and transform pain into purpose.

In the episode “South Africa: a model for resilience?” she reflects on South Africa’s apartheid history, she talks about the importance and complexity of memory, collective and individual, to build narratives. In the context of her country’s complex and painful History, she believes in lifting the voices of the people rather than the History that has been written by another hand.

“My priority is memory over History. Memory is victim-driven, it allows people to are powerless, who don’t have the pen, to share their stories and to validate their own experiences. But it is often left out of the accepted narrative, which is History. I am very partial to prioritizing memory and oral history more than an established history of South Africa. A lot of who I am is not represented in our History.”
