Moleskine Foundation and Ethale Publishing to launch first ever articles in Emakhuwa on Wikipedia

A new AfroCuration series kicking-off on September 4th and 5th

Moleskine Foundation with Ethale Publishing are working with a group of 80 volunteer Emakhuwa-language creators to pioneer the use of the Emakhuwa language on the global knowledge platform Wikipedia as part of a pan-African ‘WikiAfrica Education’ initiative. Ethale Publishing is one of five African partners in the  project led by Moleskine Foundation, supported by Wikimedia Foundation and Fondazione Aurora.

Readers in 25 languages can read about the ‘Makhuwa/Macua/Makua’ people on Wikipedia. Yet no content exists to date in the Emakhuwa language itself, which is spoken by 6 to 12 million people in northern Mozambique.

“Multilingualism is the oxygen of culture,” acclaimed Kenyan author Ngugi Wa Thiong’o told Ethale Publishing in 2019. Yet not a single African language has more than 100,000 articles on Wikipedia.

“Wikimedia’s overarching ambition is to be the platform on which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. Despite this global ambition, however, the African continent remains the least covered and supported collective of cultures, histories, ideas, and languages online,” says Adama Sanneh, CEO of Moleskine Foundation.
